Off My Playlist…

So I’ve started working out again. I’m trying to lose about 20 pounds and I’m giving myself until the end of the school year to do it. I’m doing it the good ol’ fashion way – with my treadmill, diet & weights. Here are five great songs that I worked out to tonight. Warning: most of the songs below have explicit lyrics and include Hip Hop & House. I will share a variety of songs throughout this journey but these are the songs that came up on my playlist tonight 🙂

Serena Williams Work-Out Secrets

Serena Williams is an professional athlete so her muscles are ripped, but she’s also naturally curvaceous. Williams also, like me, hates working out. She said “I actually hate working out. I hate working out more than anything, but I have to… when I’m running. I think about how much I want to win.”  In an interview, she said,

“I don’t look like Mary Kate Olson or Nicole Richie. I’m all black and I’m all woman baby. I have hips, curves, butt and boobs… I will never be a size 2. I will always be bigger. And there are tons of other women and people out there that share my same body type…”

Here are some of her workout secrets:

– Pilates 2 or 3 times a week (lengthens the muscles)

– Bikram Yoga (heated room around 105 degrees – can lose up to 600 calories per hour)

– An hour or two of cardio daily (following by strength training)

– Only eats grilled or baked chicken or fish + steamed veggies

Manifesting The Manifesto

I always enjoy when I accomplish something from my personal manifesto! Not only did I go out to get my skates today but I went to the rink! I will now be going skating once a week. The DJ played great music, I got to “break in” my skates and I broke a sweat 😉 I’m definitely a happy camper.

Weight Loss Update

Approximately 2 months ago, I purchased a pencil skirt from one of my favorite sites. Once I got it, I couldn’t fit the skirt above my thighs!!!! It was so cute and I was incredibly sad & disappointed. Rather than return the skirt, I kept it around for motivation!

This morning, I put the skirt on and not only does it fit above my thighs, it ZIPS up and can be worn out of the house now 🙂

Now that’s what I call progress. Celebrate with me by taking a bite of my lovely e-cupcake because we’d NEVER celebrate weightloss with unhealthy calories off line 🙂 (tee-hee-hee!)

Beyonce’s Workout

Standing at 5’7″ and weighing an average of 139 lbs. The pop diva works hard to maintain her shape. She claims to be predisposed to chunky genes and fights flab in the following ways:

  • Every morning she does 30 minutes of cardio + 45 minutes of free weights
  • runs 6 days per week doing 4 miles in 40 minutes
  • yoga once per week for strength and toning
  • she enjoys biking and dancing (during touring season she practices up to 9 hours a day for her tours)
  • limits calories to 1,600/day
  • does 100 squats/lunges and step ups
  • uses 5 lb. weights and does bicep curls to the tune of a song
  • uses 3 lb. weights and boxes to the tune of a song

To maintain her figure, Beyonce works out everyday. Her fitness regime is strict, she’s consistent and she varies her workouts.

An Inspiring Weight Loss Story

It’s amazing how much weight loss can really change your physical appearance. I’m inspired by this sista and her 100 pound weight loss in 1 year. She’s managed to keep it off for 4 years now!

Work Out Mix

Tonight, I did 30 minutes on the ‘mill (treadmill). I started with 15 minutes of step and ended with 15 minutes of power walking. I then used 5 lb. weights to do my arm exercises. My favorite music for cardio is called “juke” or “ghetto house music.” DJ Clent always remixes some of the new songs.

Weight Watchers Check In…

So here is what I’ve learned so far on my weight loss journey.

#1. Diet really matters. All the experts and everything that I consulted said that diet is at least 50% (but more 75 or 80%) of the weight loss battle. I started eating more fruits and veggies (which are worth 0 points on the plan). I replaced potato chips with raw cut green, red, and orange peppers (I love the crunch). I started eating veggies and fruit for breakfast and snacks. I stopped eating after a certain time (9 p.m.) where before I was truly a “midnight snacker.”

I have been going WAY over my daily point allowance… which means I have to figure out how to have healthier meals and how to control my portions. A part of the problem is because my family is so busy, we go out to eat A LOT. So I’m working on making better choices when I do go out.

#2. Consistency is key. For 5 days, I worked out for one hour each, walking 2 miles each day. The thing about exercise is that you can’t think about it, you just have to do it. My inspiration quote for January was, “Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.” – Edward Stanley. My proudest moment was after leaving a 3 hour meeting, rather than running home and crashing in the bed, before sitting down I threw on my workout clothes and hopped on the treadmill.

#3. Listen to something, read something or watch something. On most nights I listend to the Kardashian sister’s new book Kardashian Konfidential. It really helped to pass the time along. I encourage you to download a book that you haven’t been able to get to and listen to it while working on. On another night I read the new edition of Real Simple Magazine. The print was large enough for me to see and it took my mind off working out. Finally, I watched an episode of Basketball Wives on my laptop. That was a 45 minute episode and before I could even think of being tired or “mad” that I was working out, it was over. Many people work out in front of the TV for that very reason. You can catch up on your favorite episode(s) and lose some weight in the process.

So far I’ve lost 8 lbs! My goal is to lose at least 20 lbs and at most 50 lbs.

Why Weight Watchers?

After watching Jennifer Hudson’s amazing transformation… I became a believer! I signed up for Weight Watchers Online yesterday and my starting weight is 177.5 pounds – Dress Size 10!

I’d like to lose about 40 pounds and get down to a size 6… Not to mention increase my stamina and flexibility. So here are the pictures that convinced me:

At her largest she was a Size 16… She’s now a size 6 (a stunning 5 dress sizes smaller)!

She doesn’t plan on losing any more weight. She’d like to maintain her Size 6 frame. She’s also 5’11, so her size 6 looks a lot different on my 5’3 frame. I may have to go down to a 4, but I’ll know when I reach my goal when I see it.

My first goal is 168 pounds… I’ll let you know when I get there!
