When I logged in to my Google Account this morning, and clicked my “Google Reader” Tab, there was little announcement that Google Reader will be shutting down on July 1st. Shocked, I checked the Official Google Reader Blog and found this:
I’m not going to gripe over it although you can read about how useful I find Google Reader is here: https://donnienicole.com/2010/09/04/google-reader/.
Here are my recommendations for replacing Google Reader so that you can continue to stay on top of your blog and news feeds:
- Feedly has almost 4,000 reviews and is a 5 star App. It’s a free App and like Google Reader is available on the web (Safari), and on your mobile devices. This app looks the most like Google Reader. Here is a link to the online page: http://www.feedly.com. Now this links to your Google Account so we have to watch to see how they respond to the new Google Reader shut down although they have a plan to seamlessly import your information without a hitch.
- Feeddler RSS has a little over 1,100 reviews and is a 4 1/2 star App. There is a free version and a Pro Version that has 5 stars. It currently costs $4.99 and is available on the iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad. There is no web version. Click here to download from the Apple iTunes Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/feeddler-rss-reader-pro/id365710282?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4
- Flipboard This App is free and has over 8,400 positive reviews ranking in at 5 stars. It has a beautiful visual interface. The app is designed for you to create your own magazine. It does not have a web version. It is available on the iPhone and iPad. You can download the App here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flipboard-your-social-news/id358801284&referrer=utm_source%3Dflipweb%26utm_medium%3Dweb_button%26utm_term%3Dios%26utm_content%3DUS%26utm_campaign%3Ddownload_button_ios
Let’s all say a moment of silence for Google Reader and cross our fingers that Google will only get better as it attempts to streamline and focus.
