Trying To Make Things Grow…

Now that I’m a homeowner, I’m ready to try my hand at a green thumb. As my great Aunt so eloquently put it, I come from a long line of people who were tied to the earth. My family hails from Arkansas and they were farmers. Whenever you visit the home of someone in my family you will be greeted with a beautiful yard, blooming flowers and stunning houseplants. I don’t want to overwhelm myself so I decided to start small with two containers at my front door.

I purchased the outdoor containers (matching) from Loews which I actually like better than Home Depot. Apparently, Home Depot is really for professionals and I always feel like I have to ask for help (the stores can be a bit disorganized). Loews had everything neatly displayed and it was very inspiring.

With the help of a Loews staff member and a lady who saw my husband and I walking around aimlessly, I decided to go with two flowers: Black Eyed Susans and Begonias.
Black Eyed Susans are perennials so they will come back year after year. They love full sun:

Begonias are annuals. They only last from about May – September, but I love them because they are so colorful and they have beautiful waxy leaves. So here is a current picture of one of my containers (I created the same arrangement in both):

I’m not doing too much this season. I have a lot of reading and researching to do and I don’t want to buy a bunch of flowers only to kill them lol. For the most part we’re focusing on the interior of our home and will be focusing more on the exterior next Spring/Summer. I also get really excited when I see my Black Eyed Susans starting to bloom. I can’t wait until those yellow daisy flowers come into full bloom and the cool thing is I won’t have to replant them next Spring because they’ll come back up. They also get really tall so I may have to move them to the yard at some point!
